Tech led the week, with\u00a0XLK <\/strong>+1.87%\u00a0and\u00a0QQQM<\/strong> +0.90%, while defensives lagged (XLP –<\/strong>0.72%,\u00a0XLU <\/strong>-0.16%). Energy firmed (XLE <\/strong>+1.36%) and small-caps inched up (VB <\/strong>+0.82%). Over 30 days,\u00a0AMD<\/strong>,\u00a0SNDK<\/strong>, and\u00a0ASTS<\/strong>\u00a0headline U.S. gainers, while\u00a0HSGNY<\/strong>\u00a0tops ADRs.<\/p>\n

Last week saw a stunning change in asset-class index ETF leadership for October 2025 thus far. Following a 5%+ gain in the week ending October 13, gold\u2014represented here by\u00a0GLDM<\/strong>, SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust\u2014gave all of that back and more. The\u00a06.3% loss\u00a0for the week now reduces its October gain to\u00a03.7%, barely ahead of the\u00a03.5% month-to-date gain\u00a0posted by\u00a0QQQM<\/strong>, the Invesco Nasdaq-100 ETF. This is a sharp reversal from GLDM\u2019s 230-basis-point lead at the end of last week.<\/p>\n

The great rotation to value stocks predicted by many market pundits hasn\u2019t worked out in all but one month this year\u2014and certainly not in October.\u00a0VUG<\/strong> (Vanguard Growth Index Fund ETF)\u00a0gained\u00a02.8%\u00a0versus\u00a00.8%\u00a0for\u00a0VTV <\/strong>(Vanguard Value Index Fund ETF). One rotation that\u00a0has\u00a0been working better since midyear is the recovery in small-cap stocks. Our barometer\u00a0IWM <\/strong>(iShares Russell 2000 ETF)\u00a0has gained\u00a03.4%\u00a0so far in October, double the\u00a01.7%\u00a0gain of\u00a0SPLG <\/strong>(SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF). Surprisingly, the top gainer among the index ETFs we follow this month has been\u00a0VPU <\/strong>(Vanguard Utilities Index Fund ETF)\u00a0with a\u00a0spectacular 5.2%\u00a0rise.<\/p>\n

Despite fears from some analysts,\u00a0third-quarter earnings\u00a0have not disappointed. Of the\u00a0174 S&P 500 companies\u00a0that reported so far this month,\u00a087% beat earnings estimates\u00a0and\u00a084% exceeded revenue expectations. One noteworthy stock, INTC<\/strong> (Intel), justified its\u00a04 (Buy)\u00a0ValuEngine rating: the company reported\u00a0$13.7B\u00a0in revenue and\u00a0$0.23\u00a0in adjusted EPS, both above expectations, helping the stock rise\u00a0more than 7%.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, several well-rated firms report this week, including\u00a0Twilio (TWLO)<\/strong>, rated\u00a05 (Strong Buy), and \u201cMagnificent 7\u201d names\u00a0Amazon (AMZN)<\/strong>,\u00a0Meta (META)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Alphabet (GOOGL)<\/strong>, each rated\u00a04 (Buy). If the better-than-expected earnings trend persists, it could be another strong week\u2014so much for the pundits who entered the month with \u201cOctoberphobia.\u201d That said, the month isn\u2019t over; skeptics still have one more week to be validated by a mini-crash. A potential headwind could be the\u00a0Fed\u2019s upcoming report, which is expected to outline its latest stance on interest rates and quantitative tightening. Next week, we\u2019ll be able to\u00a0wrap up\u00a0the month.<\/p>\n
