started off with a boom. We were amused to hear TV news snippets attribute the daily jumps to reported progress in finding a peaceful solution to the problems in the Middle East. Perhaps it is because all our proprietary ratings and metrics are earnings-and-market based but we think the market’s rise last week had more to do with corporate earnings reports.

During the week of August 3–7, 2026, a total of 3,897 companies worldwide tracked on the Markets Insider Earnings Calendar released their quarterly financial results. Within the benchmark S&P 500 index, where approximately 85% to 90% of components have now completed their reports, a robust 88% of companies surpassed analysts’ EPS forecasts, while the remainder either matched or missed expectations. Fueled by a weaker-than-expected July jobs report, the broader stock market logged its strongest weekly rally since April, lifting top performers that beat earnings estimates. In particular:

• Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) blew past estimates on Wednesday due to a 91% surge in Mounjaro sales, driving a 3.2% gain for the week.
• Palantir Technologies (PLTR) reported a significant earnings beat on Monday, pushing its stock up 9.4% by Friday’s close.
• Airbnb (ABNB) topped Q2 profit and revenue expectations late Thursday, causing its stock to surge more than 10.7%.
• Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): Bested semiconductor expectations on Tuesday, contributing to the Nasdaq’s 5.2% weekly gain.
• Caterpillar Inc. (CAT): Posted robust industrial profits on Tuesday morning, gaining 3.3%.

All of these companies except Airbnb (ABNB) were mentioned as 5-rated companies expected to report in last Monday’s strategy note. On the other end of the spectrum, two notable companies that disappointed street analysts last week were:
• The Trade Desk, Inc. (TTD): Dropped 21.87% over the week following lukewarm guidance on revenue projections after hitting but not exceeding estimate.
• Celsius Holdings, Inc. (CELH): The beverage maker’s stock sank 18.46% following a broad 14% earnings miss.
We don’t foresee a rebound for either company. TTD is rated 2 (Sell). CELH is rated 3 (Hold) with a 1-yr. forecast of a 4.5% price decline by our model.

As earnings season winds down with nearly 88% of S&P 500 companies already reporting, there are still companies this week for which we have high expectations. We rate Applied Materials (AMAT) is rated 5 (Strong Buy). Three ranked just below a Strong Buy with 4 (Buy) that are also due to report: Cisco Systems (CSCO), Cardinal Health (CAH) and REIT giant Simon Property Group (SPG). A mammoth non-US company, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), is rated 5. But even a strong earnings report may not be enough to fight off the latest political headwinds. Proceed with caution.

www.ValuEngine.com (ValuEngine, Inc) is a stock valuation and forecasting service founded by Ivy League finance academics.
