We have seen good times for auto makers over the past few years as pent up demand from the Bush recession, low gas prices, and other factors have provided great sales. Notwithstanding their own bad decisions–hello, VW diesel-emissions cheating!–manufacturers have been “motoring” along nicely.
Today, we take a look at Fiat Chrysler, the giant manufacturer created by combining two long laughed-at brands– Chrysler, famed for the Carter-era bailout, and FIAT of “Fix It Again Tony!” fame.
This company has been selling @2.2 million vehicles per year and has been bolstered by popular cars from the European side, such as the Fiat 500. They are moving into the US market with their Alfa-Romeo cars in an aggressive way as well. They also benefit from the current oil prices, as their Jeep brand is back in favor despite lower mileage for these vehicles.
Of course, not everything is perfect. Fiat Chrysler has their own diesel-emissions problems, and is currently under scrutiny from the US Justice Department as they attempt to correct their own software “defeat-device” issues. They have @104k vehicles on the road that need a software update or some other fix to make them compliant with EPA regulations. This scandal effects their 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks. They also have to deal with more than 20 lawsuits over this issue.
How they are handling things so far this summer will become more apparent on July 26th, when they report their latest quarterly results. Right now, the company is considered a decent potential pick for value-oriented investors.
