Weekly Market Recap – Week Ending Oct 16, 2026
U.S. equity markets faced significant selling pressure this week, with sharp declines in technology and growth-oriented stocks contrasting with strong gains across defensive, energy, and value sectors. The NASDAQ 100 ETF (QQQM) plunged 5.54%, while the S&P 500 ETF (SPYM) fell 1.98%, weighed down by a steep 7.70% decline in Technology (XLK). Growth (VUG) also dropped 4.39%, highlighting a pronounced rotation away from growth-oriented equities. In contrast, Consumer Staples (XLP), Energy (XLE), Dividend Equity (SCHD), Health Care (XLV), and Materials (XLB) posted strong gains, while Value (VTV) advanced 1.28%, suggesting investors favored more defensive and value-oriented exposures. Despite the broader market weakness, select stocks maintained strong 30-day momentum, led by Moderna (MRNA), Petrobras (PBR), Shopify (SHOP), Marathon Petroleum (MPC), BP (BP), and Suncor Energy (SU), highlighting continued strength in energy, biotechnology, and select technology names.
